Relations
- located underneath the head of caudate nucleus.
- The STN is located ventrolateral to the red nucleus in the diencephalon.
Ventral striaum
- is nucleus accumbens
- The Lentiform nucleus used to be a singular structure but due to evolution and enlargement of the human brain, the posterior limb of the internal capsule enlarges causing splitting of the GPi, GPe and putamen.
Function
- part of the reward system due to its strong connections to the ventral tegmental area in the mesolimbic dopamine pathway.
