Temporalis muscle

  • Extends from the superior temporal line to the coronoid process of mandible.
  • Its fibers converge and descend between the zygomatic process and the lateral side of the cranium to a tendon that attaches to the coronoid process.
  • The muscle’s outer surface is covered by the temporal fascia,
    • Which is comprised by a single layer over the posterior 3/4 of the muscle
    • Divides into (on the outer surface of the anterior quarter of the muscle)
      • Superficial layers
        • Attaches to the lateral border of the orbital rim and zygomatic arch.
      • Deep layers
        • Attaches to the deep layer attaches to the medial border of the orbital rim and zygomatic arch
    • A fat pad and a temporal vein fill the space between the two fascial layers.
