Superior laryngeal neuralgia

  • A rare disorder characterized by severe pain in the distribution of the superior laryngeal nerve.
    • Patients experience pain along the anterior cervical triangle with extension to the ipsilateral ear and eyes, intermittent hoarseness, and paralysis of the ipsilateral cricothyroid muscle on laryngoscopy
  • Pain is usually worsened by swallowing, shouting, or by head turning.
  • The aetiology of this disorder may vary:
    • Can occur after trauma,
    • Latrogenic injury (after surgery in the anterior neck such as carotid endarterectomy),
    • Result of vascular compression by PICA or vertebral artery.
  • Treatment
    • Superior laryngeal nerve blocks,
    • Nerve sectioning
    • Less commonly by microvascular decompression.
