- A rare disorder characterized by severe pain in the distribution of the superior laryngeal nerve.
- Patients experience pain along the anterior cervical triangle with extension to the ipsilateral ear and eyes, intermittent hoarseness, and paralysis of the ipsilateral cricothyroid muscle on laryngoscopy
- Pain is usually worsened by swallowing, shouting, or by head turning.
- The aetiology of this disorder may vary:
- Can occur after trauma,
- Latrogenic injury (after surgery in the anterior neck such as carotid endarterectomy),
- Result of vascular compression by PICA or vertebral artery.
- Treatment
- Superior laryngeal nerve blocks,
- Nerve sectioning
- Less commonly by microvascular decompression.
