  • Listeria monocytogenes meningitis
    • This infection commonly develops in
      • Renal transplant recipients,
      • Patients with chronic renal disease,
      • Immunosuppressed persons,
      • Occasionally in otherwise unimpaired persons.
      • It may also affect neonates.
        • This type of meningitis is not usually seen in older children.
    • It may on occasion lead to intracerebral abscess formation.
    • Treatment
      • Third-generation cephalosporins are inactive against Listeria, and ampicillin and gentamicin are recommended therapy.
      • Neither ampicillin nor penicillin alone is bactericidal.
