- Listeria monocytogenes meningitis
- This infection commonly develops in
- Renal transplant recipients,
- Patients with chronic renal disease,
- Immunosuppressed persons,
- Occasionally in otherwise unimpaired persons.
- It may also affect neonates.
- This type of meningitis is not usually seen in older children.
- It may on occasion lead to intracerebral abscess formation.
- Treatment
- Third-generation cephalosporins are inactive against Listeria, and ampicillin and gentamicin are recommended therapy.
- Neither ampicillin nor penicillin alone is bactericidal.
