- Caused
- Plasmodium falciparum (main)
- Plasmodium vivax,
- Plasmodium malariae,
- Plasmodium ovale .
- 1-10% of cases involve the CNS
- Pathogenesis
- Capillary obstruction by infected erythrocytes → cerebral hypoxia
- Manifest as acute encephalopathy, fever, decreased mental status, seizures, and focal deficits.
