Trichinosis
- Organism: Trichinella spiralis
- Mechanisms
- Ingestion of undercooked pork that contains infectious cysts → larvae enters blood →
- Encyst form in striated muscle → muscle inflammation
- Enter CNS → meningitis
- Treatment is with thiabendazole and steroids.
Angiostrongylus cantonensis
- A rat lung worm
- Involving the CNS causing eosinophilic meningitis
Strongyloidiasis
- Organism: Strongyloides stercoralis (threadworm)
- Mechanisms
- Oral ingestion → larvae penetrate intestinal wall → enter blood
- This worm can carry bacteria with it to the CNS and cause mixed meningitis
