  • What is C-reactive protein (CRP)? Where is it synthesized?
    • CRP is an acute phase reactant/plasma protein indicative of an acute inflammatory response.
    • CRP expression in the peripheral blood increases in response to injury or infection.
    • It is synthesized in the liver or adipocytes.
    • It is normal to have a mild rise of CRP after surgery;
    • This rise is highest on postoperative day 2 and subsides at postoperative day 5
  • Risk of C. Difficile infection varies by antibiotic
