Hypothermia in head injury
  • Multicentre RCTS looking at role of therapeutic hypothermia in severe TBI:
    • National Acute Brain Injury Study: Hypothermia 9NABIS: H I) – Clifton et al 2001
      • Aimed to determine efficacy of therapeutic hypothermia within 8hrs of injury
      • USA 1994-98
  • NABIS: H II – Clifton et al 2011 – efficacy of very early therapeutic hypothermia within 2.5 h of injury
    • USA and Canada, 2005-09
    • Conclusions:
      • NABIS: H I – hypothermic treatment within 8 hrs following severe TBI does not improve functional outcome
      • NABIS: H II – early hypothermic treatment within 2.5 hrs after severe TBI did not improve outcome. However role of early hypothermia in those with evacuated haematomas need further evacuation (possible due to effect on cerebral reperfusion injury)
