- Due to perinatal cerebral ischemia that occurs around the time of an infant’s birth.

- Complications during pregnancy such as placental abruption, cord accident, or cardiovascular stress due to a difficult delivery --> Hypoxic-ischemic brain injuries -->
- Centring on the deepest portion of gyri, usually in the parasagittal region. It is here that perfusion is most tenuous and, therefore, most susceptible to ischaemic damage
