    • An extrapyramidal tract
    • Located bilaterally and symmetrically in the posterior part of the brainstem
  • Made up of
    • Part of the Guillain-Mollaret triangle (dentato-rubro-olivary system)
      • Afferent
        • Red nucleus
      • Efferent
        • Inferior olivary nucleus
    • Another small tract associated with the central tegmental tract
      • Afferent
        • Reticular nuclei
      • Efferent
        • Thalamus.
    The central tegmental tract is located in tegmentum pontis between the red nucleus and the inferior olivary nucleus.
     
  • Development
    • Myelination of CTT starts at approximately 9 months in fetal life and completes around the first year of age.
  • Clinical
    • Symmetric central tegmental tract hyperintensity (CTTH) is a pediatric brain MRI finding that has been associated with various disorders including epilepsy, cerebral palsy, antiepileptic medications, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, neoplasms, and neurodevelopmental disorder
