Definition

  • Radio-opaque dye is injected into the blood vessels supplying the brain, namely the internal carotid artery and the vertebral artery

CT angiogram

  • General
      • Multi-detector CT scan.
      • Standard slice thickness between 0.5 to 0.625 mm.
      • Ionising radiation
      • Iodinated contrast given by means of a pump injection at a rate of 4-5 ml/second
      • Three primary methods of triggering the scan
        • Fixed time delay
        • Automated
        • Manual triggering

  • Advantages
    • Widely available
    • Well tolerated by most patients.
    • Overall sensitivity rate of 97%
    • Excellent spatial resolution
    • Good aid for treatment planning.
  • Limitations
    • Sensitivity of detecting smaller aneurysms (<3mm), is lower (81.8 to 84%)
    • Reduced sensitivity for AVM/DaVF.
    • Metallic artefact from clips, coils and stents limits use in follow up of treated aneurysms
    • CTA don't show flow

CT SEMAR

  • Software enhanced metal artefact reduction
