Definition
- Radio-opaque dye is injected into the blood vessels supplying the brain, namely the internal carotid artery and the vertebral artery
CT angiogram
- General
- Multi-detector CT scan.
- Standard slice thickness between 0.5 to 0.625 mm.
- Ionising radiation
- Iodinated contrast given by means of a pump injection at a rate of 4-5 ml/second
- Three primary methods of triggering the scan
- Fixed time delay
- Automated
- Manual triggering
- Advantages
- Widely available
- Well tolerated by most patients.
- Overall sensitivity rate of 97%
- Excellent spatial resolution
- Good aid for treatment planning.
- Limitations
- Sensitivity of detecting smaller aneurysms (<3mm), is lower (81.8 to 84%)
- Reduced sensitivity for AVM/DaVF.
- Metallic artefact from clips, coils and stents limits use in follow up of treated aneurysms
- CTA don't show flow
CT SEMAR
- Software enhanced metal artefact reduction
