Numbers
- 0.6 -1% of intracranial subarachnoid haemorrhage may be caused by spinal pathology
Aetiology
- Spinal vascular malformation
- Spinal cavernoma
- Isolated saccular aneurysms of spinal arteries
- Exceptionally rare causes of subarachnoid haemorrhage
- Aneurysms of the PSAs appear to be rarer and more likely to be idiopathic.
- ASA aneurysms have been reported in association with mycotic infection, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromuscular dysplasia, and Behcet’s disease.
- Tumours
- Intradural tumours most commonly schwannomas, ependymomas, and haemangioblastomas
- Very rare
Management
- Most aneurysms reported have been successfully surgically treated.
- One case in a patient with Behcet’s disease involuted with expectant management
