- A clinical test formerly used for diagnosing spinal stenosis.
- Procedure:
- Lateral decubitus position
- Lumbar puncture is performed
- Opening pressure is measured.
- Increase ICP by
- Compresses both jugular veins.
- Pressure exerted on the abdomen, which causes an engorgement of spinal veins and a rapid increase in cerebrospinal fluid pressure.
- Normal Response:
- Given normal anatomy, the increased intracranial pressure is reflected as a rapidly rising pressure measured from the lumbar needle, typically within 10–12 seconds.
- Positive Result (Spinal Stenosis):
- If there is stenosis in the spine, the response in the lumbar pressure will be damped and delayed, indicating a positive Queckenstedt's Manoeuvre.
- Current Status: This test has largely been made superfluous by superior imaging modalities available today, such as MRI and CAT scans.
